General English Program

Program Description:

The General English Program at International Language Center (iLC) Boston is designed for adult learners who are 18 or older and, with limited familiarity with English, want to advance their English language learning in a more contextualized and contemporary setting. Students will be learning to improve their vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills from a variety of topics.

Program Overview:

  • 1 hour per period

  • 15 hours of formal class per week

  • 5 hours of self study periods per week

  • 5-7 weeks in total, varied by program level

Learning Outcomes:

Level 1:

By the end of the course, students can

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction o needs of a concrete type

  •  introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has

  •  interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly

Level 2:

By the end of the course, students can

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and sentences related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, etc.)

  • communicate in simple and routine tasks asking and answering questions about familiar and routine manners

  • communicate his/her background, immediate environment and matters of immediate relevance in a simple way

Level 3:

By the end of the course, students can

  • fairly understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

  • deal with situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken

  • produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or personal interest

  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions 

Level 5:

By the end of the course, students can

  • basically understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization

  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party

  • produce clear text with some details on a range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the reasons for two opposite views

Level 4:

By the end of the course, students can

  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

  • deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken

  • produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or personal interest

  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

Level 6:

By the end of the course, students can

  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning

  • express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions

  • use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes

  • produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
